UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
