The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
