The offspring of previous South African President Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror accusations at the start of her court case in the port city of Durban.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over statements she published on online platforms several years back during deadly unrest in South Africa that followed the detention of her father.

A week of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, caused at least 300 deceased and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).

The defendant has been alleged of fuelling this violence and is charged with accusations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.

Context of the Case

The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an investigation into claims of corruption while he was serving as president.

The defendant has always refuted the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier describing the government's evidence as weak.

She has also frequently said the charges against her were an attempt to address political disputes with her dad after he founded his own political organization and ran against the ruling party.

This was reinforced by the foundation, which said the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and family-related harassment" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A few of followers from her party, the political party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other group representatives were present at the proceedings inside.

The defense has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks compelling proof for a criminal finding.
