NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly following his victory in November.

"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda voters elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will forever remain within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

But his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he came from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
