We are analyzing images and video circulated this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
