The nation's defense cabinet has voted to recognize the establishment of 19 additional outposts in the disputed West Bank, marking a ongoing drive for community development.

Hardline Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and proposed the step in concert with Defence Minister Israel Katz, declared that the approval was about blocking the formation of a Palestinian state.

Under international law, Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are viewed as illegal.

The decision has elicited censure from Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has previously stated that Israel's "relentless" settlement expansion exacerbates tensions, curtails Palestinians' use of territory, and undermines the prospects of a independent Palestinian state.

Rising Tensions and Political Fallout

Unrest in the region has increased sharply since the conflict in the Gaza Strip erupted in October 2023, further heightening concerns that settlement expansion could solidify Israel's occupation and weaken the chance for a peaceful resolution based on two states.
