Heat and Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Recent Detentions
Miami put up eighty-six opening half points against the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a decisive 146-114 victory against the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after player Rozier was detained over alleged illegal sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into illegal gambling. Both men deny the claims.
However, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded 86 opening half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match since the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.
"And 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
