Ghostface Original Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Return for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal scenario. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
